Join the Evolution

Sunderland is a place that’s as proud of its past as it is excited about its future. Nestled on the stunning North East coastline, the city traces its roots back to Anglo Saxon times – and is currently seeing transformation on an unprecedented scale.
Its business community is at the heart of that transformation. Businesses big and small are creating exciting opportunities for local people. And through their work, they fly the flag for the city, taking Sunderland’s innovation and ingenuity out to the world.

The dynamic business community that is growing in the city is attracting a new wave of business to Sunderland. Companies like Tombola and Ocado are now occupying large offices on the city’s riverside, which is being reconnected to the city centre through the Riverside Sunderland regeneration programme. The development will see both sides of the river evolve, creating the UK’s first carbon neutral urban quarter, where there will be a range of high-quality modern office spaces, cafés and eateries, a hotel and other leisure venues, and 1,000 ultra-sustainable homes, where some 2,500 people will eventually live.

Teamed with huge investment in Hillthorn Park, a new industrial hub in Washington; IAMP, where up to 7,000 jobs will be created in all, in the advanced manufacturing sector; and transformational investment in the seaside that is establishing it as a vibrant visitor destination, Sunderland is an exciting young city with a spring in its step, and backed by a determined business community that is pushing in the same direction.

“Sunderland Business Partnership provides a forum for the worlds of education, business, retail and public bodies to unite behind an ambitious, modern city and add their collective weight to the ongoing effort to make it an even better place to live, work and spend time.”

Ellen Thinnesen, Chief Executive, Education Partnership North East and Director of Sunderland Business Partnership
